I’m considering this to be one of the bigger scores of my furniture refinishing career. I was searching on Craigslist one afternoon, for a pedestal table for our kitchen. Years ago we had a round pedestal table from World Market but when I fell in love with Duncan Phyfe pedestal tables I switched things up and went with a rectangular table. My thought was, we’ll have a little more space for the 3 of us to spread our elbows, or be able to fit the occasional guest. Well…..one day last month my husband and son fessed up that they wanted to go back to round. We don’t have a huge amount of space in our kitchen so walking around the corners of the table was proving to be a bit problematic. Not horrible….but not as easy as circumnavigating a round table either. So I totally understood.
That’s what put me on the quest for a new, round, pedestal table to refinish. That’s when I came across this gorgeous thing. It’s the 4-person Della Pedestal Table from Maine Cottage. Ok, that’s the good news. The bad news….it had 3, yes 3, layers of paint. The first layer was the original Sun color. That’s where things went horribly wrong. The owner decided to do some sort of antique (??) treatment. There were streaky brushstrokes of dark teal, with hunter green layered over that. Not only were the mix of colors atrocious, but the weird brush strokes made things even worse.
So after days and days of stripping paint – it turned to sticky goo when I put the stripper on it, I was finally able to strip the top back to bare wood. The rest would’ve taken entirely too long – a lifetime probably, and I wanted to paint the pedestal anyway, so I just sanded and smoothed the base the best I could.
Next up was finishing it. I added Kona from Rustoleum, to the top. It’s a really dark, rich brown, which I chose in order to cover up all the imperfections in the wood. Then I chose Valspar Ultra Paint + Primer, for the base. In a really pretty, pale blue-green called Distant Valley. This shade is really similar to Maine Cottage’s “Bluebell” shade. Now – perfection!
